Everyone's home has that space, that piece of furniture, that cupboard used to "hide" items we don't want to have in plain sight, which perhaps ruin the aesthetics of the home or simply make it appear less tidy and organized. Among these spaces, one of the most popular for hiding various objects is the cabinet under the kitchen sink: it's easy to hide things under there, also because it's usually a part with doors that prevent you from seeing what's inside. Generally speaking, it can be a valid storage space for some items, but there are some things that just shouldn't be there: it's a small, dark space, and even if kept perfectly, it gets damp or even wet, characteristics that could end up ruining certain objects in particular, and even some foods you might choose to store there. What should you never put or store in the cabinet under the sink? Let's find out together.
1. Paper and Cardboard

Even the cleanest and most well-maintained sink can have small leaks that make the area underneath very humid. For this reason, the first items you should never store in the cabinet underneath are anything made of paper and cardboard: napkins, boxes, bags, and paper towels are all at risk, because the humidity not only softens the paper, but could also ruin anything stored inside boxes and bags.
2. Small Appliances

For the same reason, you should never store small appliances or any other electrical or rust-prone device under the sink: water and humidity are appliances' worst enemies, which can short circuit and break. The safest way to store blenders, hand blenders, food processors, and other small appliances is in a dry cabinet, preferably in their original packaging. Also be careful with rust-prone items or items made of highly absorbent materials that will come into contact with food, as humidity could deteriorate them, forcing you to throw them away.
3. Dishcloths and Sponges

If you have a dishcloth, kitchen towel, sponge, or any type of cloth, whether new or used, you should never store it under the sink because this damp, dark, and closed place is ideal for the proliferation of germs and bacteria. These types of objects, precisely because of their highly absorbent composition, would quickly become contaminated, and using them would be dangerous (for this reason, you must always remember to sanitize them thoroughly). Only sponges and dishcloths that are still sealed in their packaging and have never been opened or used can be left in the sink cabinet.
4. Dishwasher Tablets and Detergents

Storing detergent and dishwasher tablets in the cabinet under the sink is a natural progression, as this appliance is located right next to the sink in most kitchens. Be careful: it's fine if they're new and unopened, but if they're already opened, they'll deteriorate quickly due to the humidity in the room. Furthermore, if you have children or pets at home, these products may be at their height and dangerously easy to access.
5. Potatoes, Onions and Other Foods

The space under the sink is a dark place, so you might think it's a good place to store certain types of foods that need to be kept away from direct light. The problem, however, is always humidity: products like potatoes and onions, flour, and even salt are very sensitive to humidity, and while they certainly need a dark place, they also need to be away from heat and humidity. Stored under the sink, they would quickly rot; it's best to store them in a cellar or, failing that, a cupboard away from heat, light, and humidity.
