Ahead of National French Fry Day 2025, Talker Research and McCain Foods surveyed 5,000 Americans to uncover the most beloved fry style in each state—and the results are both delicious and revealing. While fries are universally adored, the study found that preferences vary wildly by region, with some states embracing classic simplicity and others opting for bold, crispy innovation.

The Most Popular Fry Style Overall
Straight and seasoned fries emerged as the top choice in 28 states, making them the undisputed national favorite. These fries—typically medium-cut with a crispy exterior and a dusting of savory seasoning—were especially popular in:
- North Dakota (55%)
- Mississippi (54%)
- Alabama and Wyoming (49%)
- Louisiana and Utah (48%)
Regional Favorites That Break the Mold
Beyond the dominant straight-and-seasoned style, several states showed strong loyalty to other fry formats:
- Shoestring Fries: Thin and crispy, these were the top pick in Hawaii, New Hampshire, Michigan, Maine, and Texas.
- Curly Fries: Known for their spiral shape and seasoned crunch, they won over Alaska, Kansas, Connecticut, and Oklahoma.
- Crinkle-Cut Fries: With their ridged texture and nostalgic appeal, these were most popular in Nebraska, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Illinois.
- Waffle Fries: Surprisingly, only Colorado crowned waffle fries as their favorite, making it the lone state to do so.
Fry Culture and Local Pride
The study also highlighted regional fry dishes that locals hold dear:
- Disco Fries in New York and New Jersey
- Boardwalk Fries in Delaware
- Horseshoe Sandwiches in Illinois
- California Burritos with fries in California
These hometown heroes reflect how fries are more than just a side—they’re a cultural staple.
Fry Facts That Unite Us
Despite the stylistic differences, Americans agree on a few key fry truths:
- 72% say the best fries are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside
- 63% believe fries can be a main dish, especially when loaded with toppings
- Top seasonings include salt, garlic powder, and parmesan
- Favorite dips? Ketchup, ranch, and cheese sauce
And yes—65% admit to stealing fries from someone else’s plate. Fry theft: the most relatable crime in America.
