For generations of breakfast eaters, keeping cereal crisp after opening has required chip clips, clothespins, rubber bands, or awkwardly rolling down plastic liners. General Mills is now addressing that daily pantry frustration directly at the grocery shelf.
General Mills officially announced the launch of Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, partnering with the household storage leader to debut what it terms the first resealable bag integrated directly inside a traditional cardboard cereal box. The new packaging innovation is rolling out across the brand’s two top-selling product varieties: classic Original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. Available as an added consumer choice rather than an outright replacement for the legacy bag-in-box format, the products launched exclusively on Walmart's e-commerce platform starting October 27, with nationwide brick-and-mortar grocery distribution expanding over the coming months.
Engineered Pour Spout Replaces Clothespins And Bag Clips
Rather than running a zipper seal across the entire top opening of the bag, the Ziploc PantrySeal liner opens only partway across the width. This intentional half-bag design creates an engineered pour spout that directs toasted oat O's smoothly into bowls, mugs, or cups without messy spilling or jagged tears down the package seams.

Once finished serving, consumers can simply pinch the built-in track closed right inside the cardboard carton, creating an airtight barrier to lock out ambient kitchen humidity and extend shelf life freshness without needing external clips or decanting into separate storage bins.
Consumer Demand Drives Manufacturing At Historic Buffalo Facility
According to proprietary consumer research cited by General Mills, approximately 90 percent of cereal shoppers routinely take extra steps beyond simply tucking in the carton tabs to preserve product crispness. Company leadership noted that General Mills receives hundreds of thousands of customer requests, emails, and direct messages annually demanding an easier way to reseal cereal boxes without supplemental kitchen gadgets. Furthermore, packaged food retail studies show roughly half of surveyed grocery consumers have switched food brands specifically because of faulty or tearing packaging.
To bring the collaboration to store shelves, General Mills is manufacturing Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal exclusively at its historic cereal production facility in Buffalo, New York—the very plant where the original Cheerioats cereal first rolled off manufacturing lines in 1941. The innovation gives breakfast eaters an airtight seal directly in the box without changing the classic oat recipe.
