Dessert gets a little more interesting when the bowl is part of the treat. These chocolate bowls are made with just dark chocolate, water, ice, and your favorite whipped cream. You just have to freeze small bowls of water around teaspoons, dip the resulting ice shapes into melted chocolate, let the chocolate set, then melt the ice away and fill the chocolate shells.

Fill the finished bowls with whipped cream, chocolate drops, berries, mousse, ice cream, or whatever sweet filling takes your fancy. They are great for dinner parties, birthdays, afternoon treats, and family desserts.

What Are Chocolate Bowls?

Chocolate bowls are edible dessert containers made by coating a mould with melted chocolate and allowing it to set before removing the mold. There are several ways to make them, but this particular method uses frozen water to create the shape.

Chocolate molding itself has a much longer history, with confectioners using chocolate to create decorative shapes and edible containers for generations.

Pro Tips for the Best Chocolate Bowls

  • Smaller bowls are easier to handle and create a more manageable dessert portion. They also require less chocolate to coat.
  • The teaspoon helps create a useful shape in the frozen water. Make sure it can sit inside the bowl without being completely submerged.
  • The ice needs to be firm before you attempt to remove it. If it is still soft in the centre, give it more time in the freezer.
  • Do not try to force the frozen shape out while it is rock solid. A short thaw makes removal much easier and reduces the chance of cracking the ice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the chocolate need to cool before dipping?

Hot melted chocolate can melt the ice too quickly. Instead of forming a neat coating, it may create uneven patches or cause the frozen shape to disappear before the chocolate has a chance to set.

How do I stop the chocolate bowls from cracking?

A good coating is the first line of defense. Make sure the chocolate covers the ice evenly and does not leave extremely thin sections around the bowl. You can also add a second layer once the first has set.

Can I freeze the finished chocolate bowls?

It is possible, but freezing is not usually necessary. Chocolate shells are better kept somewhere cool and dry where they are protected from moisture. If you do freeze them, condensation can form when they are brought back to room temperature, and that moisture may affect the texture and appearance of the chocolate.

How to Store Any Leftovers

The finished chocolate shells can generally be kept for several days if stored correctly. Keep them in a cool, dry place away from heat or sunlight. Filled chocolate bowls are best eaten shortly after assembly, especially when using whipped cream or fruit. If you do have leftovers, refrigerate them in a covered container.

Ingredients

dark chocolate
320g (2 cups)
whipped cream
Chocolate drops
water

How to Make Chocolate Bowls

Place one teaspoon inside each small bowl and pour water into the bowls.

Freeze the bowls, then take the bowls out of the freezer and thaw slightly. Remove the frozen shapes and return them to the freezer.

Melt the dark chocolate and let it cool. Take each ice bowl,  dip it into the melted chocolate, and let it set.

Allow the ice to thaw slightly once more and remove it from inside the chocolate shell. Spoon whipped cream into each chocolate bowl and finish with chocolate drops.

Enjoy!
