In response to repeated customer feedback, the retail giant is piloting a mobile solution that allows shoppers to scan items with their smartphones as they shop, build a digital cart, and pay directly via the app—bypassing the traditional checkout line altogether.

How the System Works

The new system works by having customers download the Costco app and register at the store’s dedicated Scan & Go entrance, where a QR code enables them to start a digital shopping session. As members add items to their cart, they simply scan each product’s barcode to create an electronic list. Once shopping is complete, members can pay directly in the app or complete their purchase by presenting a QR code at a specially designated Scan & Pay kiosk. Certain items, such as alcohol and hazardous materials, will still require a visit to the conventional checkout lane.
