These leaf cookies are two-tone leaf-shaped cookies with both the flavors of vanilla and chocolate. A vanilla dough and chocolate dough are combined so that the cookies have two different colors. Rolled in sugar, these make a delicious dessert or snack to enjoy with a cup of tea.

To make the leaf cookies, you first make a dough with flour, baking powder, eggs, vanilla, sugar, butter, and oil. Then, half of the dough is mixed with cocoa powder to make a chocolate dough. Then, they get shaped into leaf shapes before being rolled in sugar and baked in the oven.

What are Leaf Cookies?

These leaf cookies are leaf-shaped cookies that are made with two different doughs, one vanilla and one chocolate. The two doughs are pressed together on a spoon to give them the appearance of a leaf. Then, slits get cut into them to mimic the ribbing of leaves.

Pro Tips

  • Make sure your butter is softened before you begin making this cookie recipe. However, if you forgot to pre-soften your butter, you could grate the butter with a box grater and spread it out on a plate so it can soften quickly.
  • When shaping the cookies, grease the spoon with oil so that the dough doesn’t stick to it.
  • While this cookie recipe involves rolling the cookies into granulated sugar, you could also roll them in coarse sugar for even more texture.
  • Don’t overbake the cookies. You will know they are ready when they are slightly golden on the edges and their bottoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Freeze the Cookie Dough for Later Use?

Absolutely! To freeze the cookie dough for future use, you can place each portion of dough in a freezer bag and set it in the freezer for up to 3 months. Then, when you are ready to bake the cookies, simply let the dough thaw at room temperature before proceeding with assembling the dough into the leaf shapes and baking them.

How Can I Prevent the Cookies From Spreading Out Too Much During Baking?

If you find that your cookies spread out during the baking time, you can place them in the fridge for 30 minutes once they are assembled. Allowing them to set up with the butter in the fridge should help the cookies hold their shape better.

Can I Add Other Flavors to the Cookies?

Yes, these cookies would work well with other flavors. For example, if you would like them to have a chocolate mocha flavor, you can add some espresso coffee granules to the chocolate dough. Meanwhile, if you love the taste of chocolate and orange, feel free to add some orange zest to the dough.

How to Store Leaf Cookies

The completed cookies can be stored in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Alternatively, you can put them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
