This recipe is a clever mix of stuffed flatbread and savory fried snacks, with a filling made from boiled potatoes, fresh herbs, vegetables, and bold seasonings. Once shaped into fun twists and fried, they become delicious and can be enjoyed by anyone. This dish serves as an appetizer, a snack, or even a side dish next to grilled meats or soups.

What Are Fried Bread Twists with Potatoes?

Fried bread twists with potatoes are a delicious snack made by sandwiching a spiced mashed potato filling between layers of dough. From Indian street snacks to Middle Eastern stuffed breads and Eastern European fried dough pastries, many cultures have their own version of dough-meets-potato brilliance.

Potatoes became a global kitchen favorite because they’re affordable, filling, and work beautifully with spices. Add cumin, paprika, coriander, and herbs, and suddenly a humble potato turns delicious.

Pro Tips for the Best Fried Bread Twists

  • Letting the dough rest for 15 minutes helps the gluten relax, making it easier to roll out and shape. If you rush this step, the dough may keep shrinking back.
  • Warm potatoes mash more smoothly and blend better with the spices. Cold potatoes tend to stay lumpy and stubborn.
  • Chop the vegetables into tiny pieces, as large chunks can tear the dough or make shaping difficult.
  • Don’t overfill the dough because it can be tempting to add extra filling, but too much can cause leaks during frying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Sweet Potatoes Instead?

You can, but it will be sweeter. If using sweet potatoes, reduce moisture carefully because they can be softer than regular potatoes and may make shaping trickier.

What Can I Serve with These?

They pair wonderfully with yogurt dips, mint chutney, garlic sauce, or even a spicy tomato dip. Something cool and creamy works especially well against the warm spices.

Can I Freeze Them?

Yes, freeze them before frying for the best results. Arrange them on a tray first, so they freeze separately, then transfer to a container or freezer bag. When ready to cook, fry straight from frozen over low heat so they cook evenly without burning the outside too quickly.

Why Is My Dough Tearing?

This happens because the dough is too dry or rolled too thin. A soft, smooth dough is much easier to work with and handles the filling better.

How to Store Leftovers

If you have leftovers, you can refrigerate them for up to 3 days. To reheat, just use an oven, air fryer, or dry pan to bring back the crisp texture instead of turning them soft.

How to Make Fried Bread Twists with Potatoes

In a large bowl, add the flour, salt, cumin, melted butter, and water. Mix everything until the dough starts forming. Then knead it with your hands, cover, and let it rest for 15 minutes.

Place the boiled potatoes in a mixing bowl and mash them. Add the chopped bell pepper, carrot, green chili pepper, fresh coriander, curcumin, paprika, cumin, dry coriander, salt, pepper, and cornstarch and mix.

Once rested, divide the dough into two equal parts and roll out each half into a flat sheet. Take one rolled-out sheet, spread the potato mixture, and use your hands to gently press and level the filling.

Place the second rolled dough sheet on top like a lid and press the edges with your hands to seal it. Trim the edges if needed so the shape looks neat.

Cut the stuffed dough horizontally into 6 equal pieces. Then make vertical cuts only on the top part of each strip.

Fold each piece carefully and press lightly using a skewer stick. Twist each one gently with your hands until you get that signature spiral shape.

Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat and fry the twists until golden on both sides.

Arrange the fried bread twists on a serving plate and enjoy.
