Fluffy and studded with sesame seeds, this sesame seed bread is so delicious to use for sandwiches or to have alongside a saucy dish like soup or stew for dinner. If you have never made homemade bread before, this is a good place to start as you don’t need to assemble an entire loaf as this recipe makes six smaller buns.

To make the sesame seed bread, you first make a dough by mixing flour with water, sugar, yeast, and salt. Then, once it has risen for 40 minutes, it gets divided into six buns and set aside to rise again before it is coated in the sesame seeds and baked in the oven. The buns become light and fluffy after baking while the seeds toast to a gorgeous light golden brown.

What is Sesame Seed Bread?

Sesame seed bread is buns that are garnished with sesame seeds. These buns have a slightly rugged appearance as they are indented with your fingers which helps the sesame seeds hug to every nook and cranny.

Pro Tips

  • Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic to ensure it has the best texture possible.
  • If you would like the buns to be equal sizes, you can weigh each portion of dough so you know they are roughly the same weight.
  • When the dough is rising, keep it covered so that it doesn’t dry out.
  • Thoroughly brush the buns with the egg mixture so that they bake to an even golden brown in the oven.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use a Different Type of Seeds?

Yes, while sesame seeds are delicious, you could replace them with other types of seeds instead. Sunflower seeds, poppyseeds, flax seeds, or pumpkin seeds would all be beautiful on the buns. You could even use everything bagel seasoning if you would like a blend of seeds with the tastes of onion powder and garlic.

Can I Use Whole Wheat Flour in Sesame Seed Bread?

Yes, you could, but the bread will be much denser in texture. If you would like to make a whole wheat version rather than replacing all of the white flour with whole wheat flour, it would be best to replace only half of it so that the bread will still have a light and fluffy texture.

How to Serve Sesame Seed Bread?

This bread is perfect for sopping up sauces from meat stews, lentil stews, or soups. You could also slice the buns in half to use for sandwiches with any of your favorite meats and cheeses.
