Total time: 30 mins
Difficulty: Low
Serves: approximately 10 rolls
By Cookist

Savory puff pastry pinwheels are delicious appetizers made from puff pastry, filled with ham and cheese: quick and very easy to prepare, they are excellent for an aperitif with friends or for a different appetizer than usual.

Making them is really simple, and in a very short time you will bring tasty and stringy finger food to the table. Thanks to the use of ready-to-use puff pastry, in fact, all you need to do is arrange ham and cheese on top, roll up the pastry and cut out many small rolls, which will cook in the oven for 20 minutes, becoming puffy and golden. If you prefer, you can prepare homemade puff pastry: in any case you will get tasty morsels, suitable for adults and children.

For the filling we chose ham and emmental cheese, but you can fill them with the ingredients you prefer: cured ham, bacon, salami, turkey breast or other cured meats, and even mozzarella, ricotta cheese, slices of scamorza, basil pesto, olive's pesto and almonds or olives' paté.

For a vegetarian variant, you can enrich them with zucchini, grilled eggplants or tomatoes instead of cold cuts. If you have guests who follow a lactose-free diet, instead, opt for a vegetable or lactose-free cheese.

How to Prepare Savory Puff Pastry Pinwheels

To prepare the savory puff pastry rolls, start by unrolling a roll of puff pastry on the work surface.

Place the slices of ham on top of the pastry, leaving the edges free for about half a cm.

Cut the Emmental cheese into thin slices.

Arrange the cheese slices on the ham.

Roll the puff pastry on itself, making sure that the closure is facing downwards.

Cut the pastry into rounds of about 2cm, using a smooth-bladed knife and trying not to flatten them too much.

Place the pinwheels on a baking tray, lined with baking paper, and cook for around 20 minutes at 356°F/180°C, in a pre-heated static oven.

The savory puff pastry pinwheels are ready to be enjoyed.

To slice the puff pastry pinwheels easily, without crushing them too much, we recommend placing the filled puff pastry roll in the freezer for 10 minutes. Once the indicated time has passed, it will be easier to cut the rolls with the knife.

To obtain a more golden surface, you can brush the rolls with the beaten yolk of an egg before baking them.

How to Store Savory Puff Pastry Rolls

Puff pastry pinwheels offer maximum flavor if eaten hot and freshly baked. However, if you have any leftovers, you can keep them in the fridge for up to 2 days, tightly closed in an airtight container: before consuming them, heat them in the oven for a few minutes.
