What's more enjoyable than brunch time? It's an unmissable event for many, and it's not hard to see why: after a week at work or simply for the pleasure of being together, it's nice to meet up with friends for a drink and a bite to eat, but in a lighter and less demanding way than a full lunch or dinner. A true collective ritual, with origins dating back to ancient Rome. Typically, people go to a bar or club, but brunch time is also a great option for hosting at home: it can be a get-together with friends, but also a way to celebrate a birthday in a different way. Obviously, you need to think about the right recipes, favoring appetizers and finger foods that are simple to prepare, tasty and not too filling, and giving great importance to cocktails, the real stars of brunch time. So here's everything you need to know to organize the perfect brunch at home.

1. Create the Atmosphere

Once you've decided which room in your home you'll be hosting your brunch (the living room, dining room, basement, or garden, depending on your available space), the first thing to do is arrange it to create a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere for your guests. Place the table for your food in a corner where it won't impede their movement, and, if space permits, add a second table for drinks, plates, and glasses. Choose a theme for the tablecloth, napkins, plates, and glasses—a color or pattern that evokes the time of year or the occasion—and decorate the space with bouquets of flowers and strings of fairy lights, perhaps even a few beautiful lanterns placed on the tables and in strategic spots throughout the event. Don't forget to have background music, but remember to keep it at a low volume and choose something that isn't too intrusive: opt for lounge, jazz, fusion compilations, or create your own playlist, always choosing easy listening pieces.

2. Think About the Comfort of Your Guests

Brunch is an informal occasion, but that doesn't mean your guests have to be uncomfortable! You don't have to sit formally around a table, but you should definitely provide chairs, stools, or ottomans for those who wish to sit. Also, carefully consider the ratio between space and number of guests: in general, each person should have at least 1 square meter of space, allowing them to move around freely. If you don't have a large room or garden, it's best to reduce the number of guests to avoid creating a crowded and chaotic space, which is the exact opposite of the ideal atmosphere for a brunch.

3. Organize the Table Smartly

The rule of a brunch is to have small but delicious treats that everyone can serve themselves, mostly while standing. Therefore, it's essential to thoughtfully set the table where you'll be placing food and drinks. Ideally, you'll have two tables, one for food and one for drinks, with everything that allows guests to easily serve themselves: not just plates and napkins, but also cutlery, toothpicks, and spoons or teaspoons, depending on the type of food you're serving. Also consider plenty of glasses, perhaps of different shapes and sizes to distinguish between those for water, cocktails, and other beverages. Water, juices, cocktails, and soft drinks can be placed in glass carafes or dispensers with a tap: they'll be much more attractive to look at than plastic bottles and easier to pour. Have fun with the distribution of the appetizers, too, and don't limit yourself to placing them on standard trays; instead, opt for stands, bowls, cutting boards, and uniquely shaped containers.

4. What Drinks Should You Offer During Brunch?

When you think of brunches, you automatically think of cocktails, which are the true heart of a pre-lunch or pre-dinner date. But which ones can you offer? There are tons of ideas: you can opt for classic brunch drinks, such as the timeless and beloved Spritz or the mimosa, for a tasty carafe of sangria, for unique and fruity cocktails, or for glasses of white wine or prosecco to be served very cold. Also remember to consider some suggestions for those who don't like drinking alcohol: there are tons of ideas for equally tasty non-alcoholic drinks, but also prepare a selection of classic bitters, carbonated drinks, and fruit juices to satisfy everyone's preferences. The final touch is to set out one or more buckets of ice, so that whatever beverage your guests choose, they can enjoy it very cold.

5. Prepare the Most Suitable Recipes

When preparing a buffet, it's easy to get carried away, but when it comes to a brunch, you need to keep one rule in mind: this moment is the prelude to lunch, so it should be delicious but not overly filling. If you want to prepare a more generous buffet, it's better to transform the brunch into an actual lunch. Otherwise, give preference to tasty but not overly seasoned or elaborate appetizers, which are easy for guests to serve themselves and eat standing up without getting dirty. This doesn't mean limiting yourself to the usual chips or peanuts: you can opt for sandwiches, homemade breadsticks to dip in sauces like guacamole or olive pâté, you can make homemade pizzas, tasty puff pastry snacks, focaccia to accompany cured meats and cheeses, mini cheesecakes and savory mini muffins, and dozens of other ideas for a tasty moment that still leaves room for the main meal.
