Imagine making delicious homemade ice cream in less than 10 minutes, and without an ice cream maker! Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, thanks to a fun science experiment, it’s absolutely possible! With just a few ingredients, two plastic bags, and some ice, you'll have a creamy, homemade treat in no time. Not only will you enjoy the sweet reward of freshly made ice cream, but you’ll also get to witness a simple science trick in action.

Explanation of the Science Behind It

This fun experiment is based on the science of freezing and salt. Here’s how it works:

  1. Ice and water molecules: At 0°C, ice forms a stable, ordered structure, with water molecules bonded together. This is what keeps it solid. When ice melts, part of it turns into water while the rest remains frozen, and this equilibrium keeps the temperature at 0°C.
  2. Adding salt disrupts the balance: When you add salt to the ice, it interferes with the bonds between the water molecules. This disruption prevents the water from freezing at 0°C. Now, the water needs a much lower temperature to freeze.
  3. Melting ice absorbs energy: As the ice melts, it needs energy to continue the process. This energy is absorbed from its surroundings — the air, the container, and most importantly, the ice cream mixture inside the smaller bag. As the ice continues to melt, the temperature of the environment (including the ice cream) drops significantly, and voilà — your ice cream begins to form!

So, by shaking the bags, the melting ice cools down the ice cream mixture enough to freeze it, creating a delicious treat in minutes.

This clever experiment allows you to make ice cream in a flash! It’s a perfect way to teach kids about the freezing point, while indulging in a sweet treat.

Ingredients

Milk
100ml
Heavy Cream
100ml
powdered sugar
2 tbsp
chocolate chips
optional

How To Make Ice Cream In A Bag

In the smaller plastic bag, combine the milk, heavy cream, powdered sugar, and chocolate chips. Seal the bag tightly with a knot or clip to make sure no liquid escapes. In the larger plastic bag, add a generous amount of ice and a couple of tablespoons of table salt.

Place the smaller bag with the ice cream mixture into the larger bag, then seal it tightly.

Shake, shake, shake! This is where the fun happens. Shake the bag vigorously for about 5-10 minutes. The bag will get very cold, so use gloves or a towel to protect your hands.

Once the ice cream reaches the desired consistency, carefully remove the smaller bag from the larger one, open it up, and enjoy your creamy, homemade ice cream!
