Oven-Roasted Pork Ribs with Homemade Barbecue Sauce are a typical American dish. In the United States, they are mostly prepared for traditional outdoor barbecues, but they can also be easily cooked in the oven, as we did, obtaining an equally tasty result.

What's The Secret to Tender and Tasty Ribs?

The secret to tender, succulent pork ribs lies in following these few but essential tips. Rub the meat with a dry rub, a special blend of ground spices, then let it rest in the refrigerator for at least a couple of hours.  Before putting the ribs in the fridge, we carefully massaged them with a mix of mustard, sweet paprika, garlic, chili pepper, and cumin powder: this way, the spices will penetrate deeply and the final result will be even tastier.

Then, cook it in the oven, first covered with aluminum foil and then uncovered, brushing it occasionally with barbecue sauce: this is made by cooking ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, maple syrup, onion, garlic, vinegar, mustard, and herbs over a flame.

What is a Dry Rub?

A dry rub is a type of dry marinade used to flavor meat, without the use of liquid. It's a blend of ground spices that you can buy ready-made at most supermarkets or make at home, expertly combining the flavors to your liking.

What Can I Serve With These Oven BBQ Ribs?

Once ready, the oven BBQ ribs will be excellent served with a classic side of roasted or grilled potatoes, with soft mashed potatoes or with crushed potatoes, but also with a lighter mixed seasonal salad.

How to Make Oven BBQ Ribs

To prepare the ribs, first mix the chili pepper, mustard, paprika, cumin, garlic powder and salt in a small bowl.

Thoroughly massage the pork ribs on both sides with the spice mix.

Transfer the meat to a baking tray and wrap it in cling film and let it marinate in the fridge for at least a couple of hours.

Once the resting time has elapsed, transfer the pork ribs onto a baking tray lined with baking paper, cover them with a sheet of aluminium foil and cook everything in a preheated static oven at 395°F/200°C for about 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare the barbecue sauce: chop the onion with a knife.

Brown the onion with the chopped garlic clove and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

Add the brown sugar.

Spice with sweet and spicy paprika.

Pour the Worcestershire sauce.

Add the apple cider vinegar.

Add the mustard.

Combine 1 tsp ground pepper and the maple syrup.

Continue with the ketchup.

Finish with salt.

Mix with a spoon and let it thicken over medium heat for about 5 minutes.

Once finished, turn off the heat and blend the mixture well with an immersion blender until you obtain a smooth and homogeneous sauce.

Once the cooking time is up, take the meat out of the oven and remove the aluminium foil and bake everything again for another half hour.

Every 5 minutes, remove the pork ribs from the oven and brush them with the prepared barbecue sauce.

Once a crispy and slightly caramelized crust has formed, remove the meat from the oven.

Separate the barbecue-glazed ribs with a knife and arrange them on a serving plate, bring to the table and serve. Enjoy!

Storage Instructions

Oven BBQ ribs should be eaten piping hot as soon as they're ready. The seasoned meat can be refrigerated for up to 12 hours.
