What is a Puff Pastry Apple Ring?

This puff pastry apple ring is a take on apple tarts or apple pie as it involves a flaky dough and sliced apples. The filling is a little unique, though, as rather than just including apples, it also has ladyfingers and apricot jam for contrasting textures and flavors. The entire dessert gets assembled as a ring that can be sliced into portions that are delicious with cups of tea or coffee to cut through the sweetness.

Pro Tips

  • The puff pastry should be kept cold in the fridge until you are ready to use it as this will make it easier to work with and ensure that it puffs up in the oven forming the perfect flaky texture.
  • Use apples that will hold their texture during cooking such as macintosh, pink lady, spartan, or granny smith.
  • Evenly brush the pastry with milk to ensure it browns evenly.
  • If you don’t love walnuts, feel free to replace them with pecans which will offer a similar texture.
  • Don’t underbake the puff pastry apple ring. You will know it is properly baked when it is puffed up and has a deep golden color on both the top and bottom.
