These smoked salmon tartines are kind of like a more sophisticated version of a tuna sandwich. They involve toasting heart shaped bread before layering them with tuna salad and topping them with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Served as an easy appetizer, your guests will be asking you where you got the recipe.

To make these salmon tartines, sandwich bread is first cut into heart shapes before being toasted in the oven. Then, tuna gets mixed with mayonnaise to make a tuna salad. Finally, the tartines are assembled by sandwiching tuna salad between two of the toasted hearts, and garnishing them with cream cheese and smoked salmon. While they are simple to make, they are so delicious and elegant to look at!

What are Smoked Salmon Tartines?

Tartines are French-style open-face sandwiches. They can include many different types or bread, and a multitude of toppings such as jam, mayonnaise, cheese, meat, cheese, pesto, hummus, and more. This version is a little different in that it includes two layers of bread that are sandwiched with tuna salad and garnished with cream cheese and smoked salmon.

Pro Tips

  • Thoroughly drain the oil from the tuna to ensure that the tuna salad isn’t too wet.
  • For added flavor, feel free to add chopped dill or chives to the tuna salad mixture.
  • While the heart shapes make the cutest tartines, you can feel free to cut the bread into different shapes instead.
  • If you would prefer to use flaked salmon rather than tuna, these smoked salmon tartines will still be completely delicious.

What to Serve with Smoked Salmon Tartines?

These smoked salmon tartines can be served on a tray full of other sandwiches such as cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches or mini avocado toasts. Alternatively, you may serve them as part of a lunch with a lettuce salad.

Can I Use Whole Wheat Bread?

Yes, if you prefer not to use standard white sandwich bread, you could easily replace it with whole wheat bread instead. These tartine would also be delicious with light or dark rye bread.

Can I Add Other Ingredients to the Smoked Salmon Tartines?

Yes, you can! Since fish is wonderful with fresh herbs, feel free to add some chives, parsley, or dill to the tuna salad mixture, along with an herb garnish. The tuna mixture would also be delicious with some lemon zest if you would like it to have a brighter flavor.

Can I Use Hot Smoked Salmon?

Yes, you definitely could, although it has a flaky texture and may not look quite as elegant as a slice of smoked salmon. Whatever you choose, the tarines will be completely delicious, though.

How to Store Smoked Salmon Tartines

The assembled smoked salmon tartines should be served immediately as the filling will make the bread soggy the longer it sits. However, if you would like to make components of these ahead of time, you can store each component in the fridge separately.
