Starbucks is testing a new Protein Cold Foam with 15 grams of protein and a banana flavor, offering a creamy, functional upgrade to iced drinks as part of its summer innovation lineup.
Starbucks is shaking up its summer menu with a bold new innovation: Protein Cold Foam, a creamy, banana-flavored topping that adds a nutritional punch to your favorite iced drinks. Currently in testing at select U.S. locations, the new foam delivers 15 grams of protein per serving, offering a functional twist on the brand’s signature cold foam experience.
Early tasters describe the Protein Cold Foam as “silky, sweet, and not at all chalky”, a notable feat in the world of protein-enhanced beverages. The foam is made with unsweetened protein powder and can be added to any cold foam-compatible drink, including iced lattes and cold brews. The debut flavor—banana—is designed to evoke nostalgic summer vibes while delivering a satisfying texture and subtle sweetness.
The move taps into a growing demand for high-protein, functional beverages, especially among Gen Z and health-conscious consumers. According to Innova Market Insights, the number of high-protein drinks on the market jumped 122% between 2020 and 2024. Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol called the new foam “on trend” and “delicious,” noting that many customers already bring their own protein powders to mix into drinks—a habit Starbucks now aims to simplify.
The Protein Cold Foam is part of Starbucks’ “Starting Five” program, which tests new products in five pilot stores before a potential national rollout. Other items in the program include a flaky raspberry croissant, a double chocolate sea salt cookie, and the new Strato Frappuccino line. While no official launch date has been announced, Starbucks has hinted that the Protein Cold Foam could arrive in more stores “very soon”.
