A hotel made with pistachios. Yes, you read that right, it's not the name of a new ice cream flavor, nor a typo: there really is a hotel that draws inspiration—and some of its material—from pistachios. It's called Pistachio Villas, it's located in the verdant jungle of Ubud, Bali, and it's living proof that architecture and gastronomy can truly flirt.

We're not talking about a simple aesthetic homage to our favorite snack: here, pistachio shells have been crushed and integrated into the building's walls. In other words: from plate to concrete, via design. A "crunchy" alternative in the world of eco-architecture.

Gourmet Architecture With Jungle Views

The resort comprises nine private villas, each designed to evoke the iconic shape of the split pistachio. Seen from above, it resembles a tropical flower blooming amidst the vegetation. An architectural and organic work of art, it puts classic postcard bungalows to shame. But the real masterstroke isn't just in the form: the facade is constructed using recycled pistachio shells mixed with natural mortar. You can't eat them (too bad), but you can enjoy a wall that tells a story of sustainability and style.

The project isn't limited to the scenography. Even in its materials, the hotel embraces a zero-waste philosophy: wood, bamboo, local stone, and solar panels take center stage. Rainwater is collected and reused, and energy comes largely from the sun. Everything is designed to invite you to slow down: filtered natural light, floors that change texture underfoot, walkways among tropical plants, and private tubs immersed in silence. Here, luxury isn't shouted, but whispered: it's a sensory experience that has more in common with a blind tasting than a standard vacation.

More Pistachio for Everyone (But Only Metaphorically)

Important note: you won't find pistachios on the menu, in the face creams, or in the bar's cocktails (although they're considering it, they swear). The pistachio here is both material and concept, not a decoration on an Instagram-worthy plate. It's the soul of the project, not the garnish.

And perhaps that's precisely the beauty of it: transforming what we normally discard —an ordinary shell—into a noble, poetic, architectural element. A gesture that combines design and respect for nature, and that sends a message: even small scraps can have a big impact.
