News no chocolate lover around the world would have wanted to hear: the famous Prestat chocolate shop in London is closing its historic store after 124 years of business. A magical place that, for those who don't know, was the source of inspiration for writer Roald Dahl‘s famous and beloved "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." This closure carries with it a deeper meaning, one that represents the direct expression of an industry that is clearly struggling today.
The Reason Behind the Closure
It's called Prestat, it's located in the heart of London, in Piccadilly to be precise, and it's one of the oldest chocolatiers in the city. The British boutique, a point of reference for chocolate lovers for over a century, is unfortunately forced to close today. Founded by Antonie Dufour in 1902 and awarded two Royal Warrants – a symbol of excellence and an honor granted by the Royal Family to an organization or business – Prestat was known above all for its vast selection of chocolates and its precious truffles. As reported on their official website, it was Dufour's family who invented chocolate truffles in 1895, and Prestat's were so good they were even mentioned in Roald Dahl's novel "My Uncle Oswald." The writer, apparently, was truly enchanted by this place, so much so that it inspired the setting of another of his famous novels, which has become a cult throughout the world: Willy Wonka and his Chocolate Factory seems to have originated precisely from this place.

The decision to close stems from financial difficulties faced by the company in recent years, linked to insufficient sales and the rising cost of raw materials, particularly cocoa. The reason for the price spike is found in disappointing harvests caused by increasingly critical conditions in producing countries, hit by epidemics and weather events that continue to undermine production, especially in key areas such as Ghana and Ivory Coast. Furthermore, as reported by the Financial Times, the decision to use the highest-quality cocoa beans, such as the prized Criollo variety, has negatively impacted Prestat's sales and revenue.
The closure of the business was therefore a necessary step for L'Artisan du Chocolat to acquire the brand and relaunch it in a new format, primarily geared towards online sales. This news, however, leaves a small glimmer of hope: the products of this historic company will not disappear entirely, but will live on in the digital world and through other branches, such as Rocco Chocolatier, which will continue their operations.
