Ikea’s popular stoneware mugs, such as the VARDAGEN Mug, are a staple in many homes across the U.S. Priced affordably around $2 each, these mugs come in classic colors like slate gray and white, and they often feature other seasonal designs.
It’s easy to see why these mugs are beloved. Their simple yet timeless design is perfect for those who appreciate understated style. With a round shape that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, these mugs have become a favorite for sipping your morning coffee or tea.
But What’s That Tiny Chip?
If you’ve noticed a small chip on the underside of the mug, don’t worry — it’s there for a reason. That chip is actually a small drainage hole designed to prevent excess water from pooling inside the mug after it’s washed. According to Ikea’s design team, the drainage system works like this: “The drainage gates on the underside transport water away that may otherwise accumulate when the mug is upside down in the dishwasher.”

Anyone who’s used a porcelain mug knows the frustration of finding a puddle of water at the bottom after it’s been washed and set on the drying rack. That small chip serves a simple but meaningful purpose: ensuring that water doesn’t collect there, keeping your mugs dry and ready to use.
A Design with Purpose
The VARDAGEN Mug is part of a collection that embodies simplicity and thoughtful design. Designers Henrik Preutz, Wiebke Braasch, Ola Wihlborg, and Nike Karlsson said their inspiration came from traditional craftsmanship, with each piece given a specific function to enhance the user experience.
As they explained, “Attention to detail and soft, round shapes make a beautiful frame for the food and drink on the table.” The series, they say, is meant to be “simple, honest, and full of soul,” helping create moments and memories as you enjoy your meals and beverages. It’s no wonder that Ikea’s VARDAGEN collection has made its way into countless U.S. homes — offering quality, functionality, and style at an affordable price.
