Summer is often synonymous with traveling, discovering, and visiting new places. One of the most popular destinations during this time of year is Italy, which welcomes people from all over the world. Sometimes, however, the encounter between different cultures and worlds can lead to unpleasant misunderstandings, even at restaurant tables. This is precisely the backdrop to the latest episode sparking online discussion, involving Farah Shams, a well-known content creator with 2.5 million followers on TikTok, and Osteria il Pozzo, a historic restaurant in Menaggio, Como. What was supposed to be a peaceful Italian vacation has instead sparked a heated debate on social media, not only involving the dishes that didn't convince, but also resulting in a very serious accusation of racism.

A Bruschetta That's Too… Sweet

The TikToker shared a video on social media at a key moment in this story: she was being asked to leave the restaurant, even without paying, amid applause from other diners. According to Farah, the problems arose when the appetizers were served: she explained that she found her bruschetta decidedly too sweet, believing she shouldn't even have to pay for it. At that point, the restaurant owners' reaction was immediate: the workers at Osteria il Pozzo, for their part, allegedly asked Farah (and a friend) to get up and leave without paying the bill. However, as mentioned at the beginning, the issue isn't just about the bruschetta being sweeter than usual. The content creator reported feeling "watched and judged" from the moment she arrived at the restaurant, speculating that this treatment was motivated by racism.

Farah further clarified her position with a comment on her own video: "It was like they were waiting for us to leave… from the moment we walked in we were targeted, I was editing a video on my phone and a white lady turned around and told me to turn it off, because I was disturbing her. I'm sorry, but this is not a Michelin restaurant, I'm allowed to edit videos on my phone…"

I said I was upset with the bruschetta as it was sweet and they all ganged up on us. My friend was with me and she is a hijabi, from the moment we walked in we were stared at and felt out of place. It’s like they hated us from when we entered the restaurant . No one Arab or of colour should go there at all – racist people and the owners – the name of the restaurant was ‘osteria il pozzo’ – lake como.. also why’s everyone clapping that we left? Because they hated us from the moment we walked in. Pathetic

The Web Split in Two

The video quickly circulated online, sparking reactions from countless users. Reading the comments, two opposing camps emerged: many followers expressed solidarity with Farah, expressing outrage over the alleged hostile treatment, but also asserting their right to express a negative opinion on a dish. On the other side, however, a large number of users—including many locals— have taken action to protect the reputation of Osteria il Pozzo. The restaurant is described as a welcoming and family-friendly environment, known for its quality, locally sourced products. Criticism has been leveled at the creators, accusing them of superficially and easily exaggerating easily solvable problems, simply to attract media attention and gain followers.

The Location of The Premises

Despite the video quickly going viral, Osteria il Pozzo has chosen not to release any official statement or response to the incident. Management, at least for now, has opted for silence, refusing to fuel the media buzz generated by the online controversy and refusing to respond to even the most malicious comments. In fact, it is the customers who have spoken for the restaurant: a spontaneous and enthusiastic defense, posted directly on social media platforms.
