940,000 Bottles of Prosecco Have Been Recalled For Risk of Explosion: Here’s What’s Happening

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the recall of approximately 941,400 bottles of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco, Costco's private-label line, after some batches exhibited an unexpected risk: the bottles "may suddenly break, even if not handled or used."

The problem, according to initial investigations, appears to be related to a lack of internal pressure or an anomaly in the glass. Ten reports have been received so far, including explosions and sudden breakages, with at least one consumer injured by flying glass. To avoid further incidents, Costco urges customers not to return the product to stores: moving it could increase the risk of breakage. The recommended disposal procedure is detailed and unusual for a sparkling wine: wrap the bottle in absorbent paper, place it in a plastic bag, and dispose of it in the trash. "This," the company explains, "reduces the risk of injury from glass fragments in the event of an explosion."

Which Bottles Are Affected

Costco is urging customers to safely dispose of specific bottles of its Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, following reports of spontaneous breakage. The recalled bottles were sold between April 25 and August 26, 2025, and may still be in circulation.

Here’s how to identify them:

  • Bottle color: Green
  • Label: Purple with matching foil top
  • UPC: 196633883742
  • Item number: 1879870
  • Sold in: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin

Costco first alerted members to the issue on September 12, and issued a second warning this week.

How to Get a Refund

To receive a refund, customers should bring the recall notification letter—sent to Costco members—to their local store. No physical product return is required.
