What Is a Burrito?

A burrito is a traditional Mexican dish consisting of a flour tortilla wrapped around a variety of fillings, such as meat, beans, rice, vegetables, and sauces. The exact origins of the burrito are debated, but it is widely associated with northern Mexico, where wheat flour tortillas became more common due to the region’s climate and agricultural traditions.

The word “burrito” means “little donkey” in Spanish, and one popular story suggests the name may have been inspired by the rolled shape of the tortilla, which resembled a donkey’s pack. Over time, burritos became internationally popular, especially in Mexican-American cuisine, where countless variations developed with different fillings and flavors.

Cooking Tips

  • Cook the onion slowly until translucent before adding the meat because this helps release its sweetness and creates a more flavorful base for the filling.
  • Season the minced meat while it cooks so the spices can infuse throughout the mixture and create a richer, more aromatic flavor.
  • Allow the meat sauce to thicken properly before assembling the burritos because a filling that is too liquid can make the tortillas soggy and difficult to roll.
  • Warm the tortillas slightly before filling them because softer tortillas are easier to fold and less likely to tear during assembly.
  • Avoid overfilling the tortillas because leaving enough space around the edges makes it easier to fold and seal the burritos tightly.
  • Toast the rolled burritos in a hot pan to create a golden exterior and help the cheese melt while keeping the filling warm.
  • Cut the vegetables just before assembling the burritos to maintain their freshness and crunchy texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Chicken Instead of Minced Meat?

Yes, cooked shredded chicken is a great alternative and pairs well with the same spices, beans, and fresh toppings.

Can I Make a Vegetarian Burrito?

Absolutely. Replace the meat with beans, grilled vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, or a plant-based meat alternative for a delicious vegetarian version.

What Other Fillings Can I Add?

Rice, avocado, guacamole, sour cream, jalapeños, salsa, or roasted peppers can all be added to customize the burrito.

What Type of Tortilla Is Best?

Large flour tortillas are traditionally used because they are soft, flexible, and strong enough to hold generous fillings without breaking.

How Can I Make the Burrito Spicier?

Add chili powder, fresh jalapeños, hot sauce, or a spicy salsa to the meat mixture for extra heat.

How to Store

Store assembled burritos in an airtight container or wrapped tightly in foil in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat them in a pan or oven to help restore the crisp exterior and warm the filling evenly.

How to Freeze

Freeze assembled burritos without fresh lettuce and tomatoes, as these ingredients may lose their texture after thawing. Wrap each burrito tightly and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in the refrigerator and reheat in a pan or oven before serving.

How to Make Beef Burrito

To make the meat burrito, first prepare the filling: finely chop the onion and sauté it in a saucepan with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. When it's translucent and slightly wilted, add the ground veal and break the latter up with a wooden spoon, so that it cooks evenly.

Once the meat has changed color and is well browned, add the spices: salt, black pepper, sweet or smoked paprika according to your taste, a pinch of cumin and a teaspoon of dried oregano. If you like, you can add some finely chopped fresh chili pepper for a spicy note, or a little garlic powder for an even more intense flavor.

Complete with tomato paste and puree, mix well and cook for about 10 minutes over medium heat, stirring often, until the cooking juices have reduced and become tasty.

At this point, assemble the first burrito: place the tortilla on a cutting board and fill it on one side with two generous spoonfuls of ground meat, a little beans and some pre-cooked corn.

Combine the shredded lettuce leaves, diced cherry tomatoes, and grated stringy cheese (cheddar will work fine, but provola or fontina will also work).

Fold the sides of the tortilla slightly over the filling, then begin to roll the burrito up onto itself, forming a cylinder. Finally, finish sealing the burritos by leaving the tortilla flap facing down, touching the cutting board. Repeat with the remaining burritos until you've used up all the ingredients.

Toast the burritos in a pan until they are golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside.

The burritos are ready: bring them to the table and enjoy them piping hot, stringy and soft at the heart!
