German potato dumplings are a lovely treat in itself and when served with the brown butter sauce, you will be drooling over this delicious delight!

These are not very high on salt and flavors. But, only a true foodie will relish the subtle flavor, lovely texture, and delicious combination of this preparation!

Instructions

Mash the boiled potatoes until no lumps are present. Add the flour to the potatoes and then carefully crack open the egg over the potatoes. Add bread crumbs, salt, and nutmeg to the potatoes. Mix the dumpling mixture until it is well combined and no lumps are present.

Heat a pot filled up to 3/4th of its volume with water for boiling. Now, shape the dumpling mixture in to small balls of about 2-inch width and then add them carefully to the simmering water. Repeat with the entire potato mixture. Cook the dumplings on simmer for 5 to 6 minutes or until the dumplings are cooked at the center. Use a slotted spoon to remove the dumplings carefully on a serving plate.

Meanwhile, in a small pan heat the butter to prepare the brown sauce. Add the finely chopped onion to it until the onion is golden brown in color. Remove the pan from heat and add a tablespoon of bread crumbs to the hot pan. Now, pour the hot sauce over the potato dumplings. Serve hot dumplings and enjoy!

Tips

Make sure that the potatoes are boiled thoroughly. Make sure that you carefully remove the egg shells while you break the egg. A wiser technique would be to break the egg in a separate bowl first and then use that broken egg for the recipe. You can also prepare the dumplings in advance and then just steam them so that they are hot and soft again, before serving.
