Oatmeal is a sweet oatmeal soup, typical of Anglo-Saxon countries, where it is usually eaten for breakfast. To make it, oat flakes are cooked in milk, water, or a combination of both, until they reach a creamy consistency. The porridge is then served hot, garnished with toppings of your choice, usually dried fruit, fresh fruit, honey, maple syrup, yogurt, chocolate, and seeds.
The sweet version is the most common, but there is also a savory variant, in which the oats are cooked in water or broth and enriched with savory ingredients such as eggs, vegetables and spices.
Porridge is a healthy and complete food, appreciated above all because it is rich in fibre, highly satiating and can be customized according to one's tastes and needs.
We sweetened it with honey and garnished it three different ways: with banana, sesame seeds, and walnut kernels; with raspberries, plain yogurt, and chocolate chips; and with apple slices, pumpkin seeds, and almonds.

Tips and Variations of Oatmeal
- For a creamier texture, we suggest using extra-fine rolled oats, or blending them briefly in a food processor. For a more rustic texture, you can use whole oats, but you may need to soak them for a few hours before cooking. The key is to choose natural rolled oats, with no added sugar.
- You can change the ratio of milk to water according to your tastes, or replace the milk with a plant-based drink, such as soy or oat milk .
- We preferred not to add any sweetener during cooking but, if you wish, you can add a spoonful of honey.
- You can add spices and flavorings to the porridge to taste, for example a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom powder, vanilla seeds, grated citrus zest.
How to Store Any Leftovers
The porridge can be stored in the refrigerator, well covered with cling film, for up to 1 day.
