In a moment that blended divine tradition with deep-dish devotion, Pope Leo XIV was surprised with a delivery of his favorite pizza—Aurelio’s pepperoni pie—hand-carried from Chicago to Vatican City. The six-inch personal pizza was gifted to the pontiff on July 30, as he made his way through St. Peter’s Square, blessing babies and waving to crowds. But when he spotted the familiar Aurelio’s Pizza logo, he paused mid-procession and gestured for the box with unmistakable excitement.

A Devout Fan Since the 1960s

Born Robert Prevost, Pope Leo XIV made history earlier this year as the first American pope, and his Chicago roots run deep. According to his brother, John Prevost, the pontiff has been a lifelong fan of Aurelio’s Pizza, a family-owned chain known for its thin-crust pies and signature tomato sauce. “He devoured the whole thing,” John told WGN-TV, confirming that the pizza was shipped using dry ice to preserve its freshness.

Joe Aurelio, president and CEO of the pizzeria, said the moment was “amazing,” adding that the pope has been visiting their Homewood, Illinois location since the 1960s. “For him to recognize the pizza and actually stop there in the audience was incredible,” Aurelio told NBC News.

A Delivery Mission Blessed by Fans

The pizza’s journey to Rome was orchestrated by a group of young Catholic influencers, including Madeline Daley, a 22-year-old from Cincinnati who carried out the final leg of the delivery. As the pope’s motorcade passed through the square, Daley waved handmade signs reading “We Have Aurelio’s Pizza” and “Pope Leo I Brought You Pizza.” The pontiff, mid-blessing, spotted the box and signaled to his security team to retrieve it. Daley’s screams of joy were captured in viral footage as the pope smiled and accepted the cheesy gift.

A Slice of Americana in Vatican City

The delivery wasn’t just a quirky stunt—it was a heartfelt gesture that resonated with fans and food lovers alike. In a city known for its Roman-style pies, the arrival of a Chicago pepperoni pizza was a reminder that comfort food knows no borders. And for Pope Leo XIV, it was a taste of home that brought a smile as wide as the basilica behind him.
