Are you on the sweet or savory team? And be careful what you answer, because it could spark a potentially endless discussion: as if it were one of those existential questions like "To be or not to be?", "Red pill or blue pill?", something like that. The answer, obviously, won't take you into a virtual world, but it can certainly say a lot about your personality. Because it's not just an eternal battle between those who think savory is all a man could desire versus those who believe that, come hell or high water, sweetness is simply a must. According to some studies, your preference has to do with your way of being and experiencing life: in this article, we'll explain why.

"Tell Me What You Eat and I'll Tell You Who You Are."

When it comes to taste preferences, we hear all sorts of things: that we prefer certain foods because we were accustomed to certain flavors as children, or that sweet foods are better because they release certain substances that boost our mood, or that we don't like bitter foods because in prehistoric times they were usually poisonous… it's all true. But there's another really interesting aspect of how your preference is directly linked to your personality: whether we're more affectionate or more pragmatic people can be understood by what we eat.

If You're on "Team Sweet"

If you eat sweets, you're a sweet person, that's all. It may seem trivial, but it could be true: according to research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, people who prefer sweet flavors have a more forgiving and affectionate personality. The research presents five studies demonstrating how people who prefer cakes and cookies are more well-disposed toward others, but also more agreeable, helpful, and affectionate. So, if you're looking for help from someone, offer them a slice of cake first and you ‘re done.

It also seems that people who prefer sweets are more inclined to spend time with others, for example during snacks. Sweet foods activate specific hormones linked to tranquility, well-being, and joy, and therefore have a particular influence on people's attitudes, stimulating good mood.

If You're "Team Savory"

Couch, Netflix, and pizza: that's probably what Will Smith really thought when he said, "This part of my life, this little part of my life, you can call it happiness." If you're a savory food person, we know you agree. But why do we like them so much? Some past research has attempted to explain this preference by stating that premature babies with low sodium levels at birth develop a predilection for salty foods as adults.

According to some psychological studies, however, those who prefer salty foods are more inclined to strong and decisive flavors and, similarly, have a more adventurous personality, a more pragmatic and rational character and are always seeking new stimuli. People who prefer salty foods are also considered "supertasters ", that is, people particularly sensitive to flavors, thanks precisely to their preference for salt.
