The Zombie Cocktail is one of the world's most famous Tiki drinks, perfect for an after-dinner drink with friends. It's made with three types of rum (dark, gold, and Demerara), lime juice, Falernum, Angostura, Pernod, Don's Mix, and grenadine, all poured into a blender and blended with ice cubes. The mixture is then poured into a tall glass (usually ceramic) and garnished with a sprig of mint.

Zombie Cocktail's History and Alcohol Content

The recipe was invented in the 1930s by Don Beach, an American businessman who, upon returning from trips to the Caribbean, founded  Tiki Restaurants & Pubs in Los Angeles, inspired by the exotic culture. One legend has it that Beach created the first Zombie cocktail for a customer who wanted to sober up from a hangover: in reality, the drink's smooth, sweet taste hid a rather strong alcohol base (ABV or around 15% to 25%) so much so that the man returned after a few days complaining that drinking it had turned him "a zombie."

How to Make Don's Mix at Home

To make Don's Mix, the essential basic preparation for this recipe, you can mix 2 parts white grapefruit juice and 1 part cinnamon syrup.

Ingredients

ice cubes
170g
Dark Rum
45ml
golden rum
45ml
demerara rum
30ml
Lime juice
30ml
falernum
15ml
grenadine
1 tbsp
Angostura
1 splash
pernod
6 drops
mint tuft
1
donn's mix
15ml

How o Make a Zombie Cocktail

To prepare the zombie cocktail, pour the ice and gold rum into the kitchen mixer jug.

Also add the Demerara rum.

Add the dark rum and the angostura bitter.

Continue with the squeezed and filtered lime juice.

Pour in the Don's mix and the Farlernum.

Finally, complete with drops of Pernod and Grenadine. Blend with the mixer for a few seconds at a time, so as to crush the ice well without completely breaking it up.

Pour the mixture into a tall tumbler and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

The Zombie cocktail is ready to be sipped. Enjoy!
