Hair shafts consist of three layers – the medulla, the cortex and the cuticle. The cortex is the middle layer, and provides the hair’s strength, color and texture. The shaft itself is largely made up of keratin, which is a fibrous protein – your nails are also made of keratin.

Eating a diet rich in protein means you’re giving your body and hair what it needs to be strong and healthy.

The cortex and cuticle can be strengthened and smoothed when you eat the right amount of protein. Research has shown that women who don’t eat enough protein can suffer from thinning hair, hair fragility and hair loss. Heat-styling appliances and chemicals in gels and sprays can also contribute to protein loss.

Separate the yolk from the egg, and add two tablespoons of coconut oil to the whites. Whisk together until they’re blended, and apply the mixture to damp hair, from roots to tips.

Comb the mixture through your hair to ensure an even coating, and leave it to soak in for 20 minutes. Shampoo the mixture out of your hair with cool water. Don’t use warm or hot water, or you may end up with cooked egg whites on your hair!
