We’ve all heard of the usual aphrodisiac foods that are claimed to ramp up your sex drive, such as oysters and strawberries, but there are some more unusual foods out there that may do the job just as well, or better. Some of these foods are even backed up by scientific studies, and not just myth and legend.

If you’re stuck in a bedroom rut, and want to try eating some foods that can help get you in the mood, check out these 6 suggestions recommended by experts.

Red Pepper

Red peppers don’t just spice up your food, they can spice up your love life, too. They give you a boost of adrenaline-fuelled energy, which you can transfer to your bedroom antics. Red peppers can make you feel in better overall health, too, due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Figs

Figs are thought to be a sexual stimulant. They don’t just taste great, they also look sexy too. Figs are high in amino acids, which can boost your stamina and increase your desire.

Asparagus

Asparagus is high in vitamin E, which can increase blood and oxygen flow to your genitals. It also has high levels of potassium, which has been linked to production of sex hormones.

Pomegranates

This beautiful fruit has a well-deserved label as a superfood. Not only are they good for your overall health, but they are packed full of antioxidants, which can help deliver more blood flow to all areas of your body. There have also been some studies that suggest pomegranate juice could help men with erectile dysfunction.

Maca

If you’ve never heard of Maca before, it’s a sweet root vegetable commonly eaten in South America. Indeed, it goes by the nickname ‘Peruvian Viagra’, and its aphrodisiac properties are actually backed up by scientific fact.

Animal studies using Maca show that libido and erectile function increased in the mice that were fed it.

There have been human-based studies too, that show that the participants experienced enhanced sexual desire after eating Maca. They did consume it every day for between two and twelve weeks, though, so it’s not a food that’s going to get you in the mood if you want to feel horny tonight!

Fenugreek

This annual plant is cultivated worldwide, and commonly used in South Asian dishes. It’s also used in Ayurvedic medicine as an anti-inflammatory, libido-boosting treatment.

Fenugreek appears to contain compounds that the body uses to create sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. In a small study of fenugreek, men were given 600mg of fenugreek extract every day for six weeks, and they reported increased arousal and more orgasms.

A similar study investigated the effects on women with a low sex drive who were given 600mg of fenugreek extract daily. It found that the women who took fenugreek experienced a significant increase in sexual desire compared to a placebo control group.
