On TikTok, food trends come and go in a matter of weeks, but every now and then, one pops up that sparks even more discussion. And the so-called "chip bag sandwich" probably fits this bill. It's not a sandwich, but a deconstructed version, chopped up and served—as if that weren't enough— in a bag of chips. This grotesque idea originates from our very own United States, specifically Long Island, near New York City, and a few viral videos were enough to transform it into a phenomenon imitated and revisited in every corner of the web. The most widespread version is the one made viral by Yaphank Deli, an American restaurant that calls itself " the home of the chip sandwich" on its profiles.
How to Make a Chip Bag Sandwich
Self-declared "the home of the pickle sandwich," Yaphank Deli is known for its quirky sandwich ideas. On its TikTok profile, it showcases a variety of them, and some of them even look delicious: in one of its most popular videos, it features two buttered and perfectly browned slices of bread topped with cheddar, pepper jack, jalapeño, bacon, and spicy mayo. Well, there's a certain type of person who might like it. The latest trend, however, doesn't seem to be as popular. And the reason is easy to explain.
The preparation is almost disarming in its simplicity, but that doesn't seem to be enough to win over everyone. To make a "chip bag sandwich," all you need to do is choose the ingredients of a classic sandwich, such as cold cuts, cheese, vegetables, and a few more. But instead of layering these ingredients between two slices of bread, you need to arrange them on a cutting board and chop them until they're small pieces (but not mush). The goal is to maintain a normal consistency, so they can be picked up with a fork.
This mixture, at least in the Yaphank Deli version, is then poured into a bowl, seasoned to taste, and mixed well. At this point, the ingredient that gives the recipe its name comes into play: ordinary bagged chips. The bag is opened, the chips inside are crumbled, and poured over the remains of what was supposed to be a sandwich. The result is served in the same bag and eaten with a fork. The final step serves to add a touch of flavor, since the chips used don't necessarily have to be the classic ones; spicy, BBQ, or many other varieties are also possible. The added bonus, if we can call it that, of this recipe is that it's infinitely customizable and, with the right choices, even gluten-free, since there's no bread involved. In fact, these chips are now very easily found in gluten-free versions.
Viral Chip Bag Sandwich Recipes
Let's be clear: potato chips are delicious and are undoubtedly among the world's most beloved snacks. It's therefore understandable that over time, some have tried to add them everywhere to steal that irresistibly crunchy, salty flavor. But this time, more than just a gamble, it seems like we're witnessing something that goes against the very evolution of cuisine: what's the point of taking an already balanced dish and reducing it to a shapeless mince, to be eaten with a fork in a bag full of oil and salt? And the visual result, we can clearly say, is anything but inviting.
This trend, with millions of views but also hundreds of criticisms, is just further proof that on TikTok, simply doing something simple with readily available food is enough to attract a lot of people, regardless of the end result and whether it's just fun to make or even delicious. Ultimately, chips work as a crunchy side dish alongside a sandwich, but not as a structural replacement. "Chip bag sandwiches" will remain a memory tied to social media, while the real recipe will continue to be what it has always been: rich, balanced, and tasty. Simply put, a good sandwich.
