Mention the word smoothie, and some might conjure up an image of an overly-healthy looking green drink. Not this recipe! This chocolate banana smoothie is easy, healthy, and nutritional, but you won’t think so when drinking it. It’s more like a healthy chocolate milkshake!

The banana makes it super creamy and the added cocoa powder gives it just enough chocolate flavor to make you think you’re having an indulgent chocolate shake. And you wouldn’t even believe that you only need three ingredients, bananas, cocoa powder, and ice! Yes, it’s possible to satisfy your chocolate milkshake craving without expensive ingredients.

You can customize the healthy chocolate banana smoothie according to your preferences, for example by adding peanut butter. It’s perfect for any time—whether it’s for breakfast or dessert time!

Chocolate Banana Ingredients

Bananas – for the best tasting smoothie milkshake, use ripe bananas—they will be sweeter.

Cocoa powder – use natural, unsweetened cocoa powder.

Ice – make your own ice cubes at home and use them for this recipe.

How To Make Chocolate Banana Smoothie

Prepare the bananas by peeling them and cutting them into slices. Add them to the blender, together with the ice and cocoa powder. Blend the mixture by pulsing until it’s smooth, homogenous, and resembles a thick milkshake.

Chocolate Banana Smoothie Variations

Why not make a peanut butter and chocolate smoothie by adding a heaped tablespoon of peanut butter before blending.

This recipe is perfect for vegans, as it contains no animal products.

For a thinner, more liquid smoothie, add any of the following liquids: almond milk, dairy milk, water.

Want to increase the protein? Add protein powder, almonds, Greek yogurt, or any other nut butter.

If the smoothie is not sweet enough, you can add 3-4 dates and blend it together with the other ingredients until fine. You can also add a drizzle of honey.

Tips For Healthy Chocolate Banana Smoothie

Prep ahead and always be ready for breakfast, by keeping the bananas in the freezer (this also skips the refrigeration step). Peel the bananas and slice them. Transfer the slices to a Ziploc bag and freeze. Take out as much as you need when making a smoothie and store the rest in the freezer.

Give it more flavor by adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

If you’re serving this smoothie as a dessert, make it resemble a milkshake by adding a dollop of fresh whipped cream on top.

How To Store Chocolate Banana Smoothie?

You can store your blended smoothie in a jar (with a tight-fitting lid) in the fridge for up to 3 hours.

Alternatively, you can freeze the smoothie for up to 3 months.

Ingredients
Bananas
400 g (1.3 cups)
Cocoa powder
30 g (0.3 cup)
Ice
60 g (0.4 cup)

Instructions

Peel the bananas.

Cut the bananas into pieces. Refrigerate the bananas for at least 3 hours.

Place the banana pieces in a blender, add a few pieces of ice and cocoa.

Blend the ingredients well, until you get a thick mixture that resembles an ice cream milkshake.
