If you are looking for a special dessert to serve to your family or guests, these fried flowers will fit the bill! They are golden, fried brioche that can be garnished with jam for added sweetness.

To make the fried flowers, you first make a dough by mixing sugar, yeast, salt, warm milk, warm water, and flour. Then, after the dough has doubled in size, it gets shaped into flowers and set aside to rise again. Finally, they get fried in hot oil before serving.

What are Fried Flowers?

Fried flowers are fried pastries made with a brioche dough. Hence their name, they have flower shapes. They can be dolloped with jam in the center to add color, flavor, and sweetness if desired.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t overheat the milk and water or you will kill the yeast. The ideal temperature for them is around 100 F (37.7 C) or 110 F (43.3 C).
  • Don’t overwork the dough or the pastries will be tough.
  • If your dough isn’t rising, move it to a warmer location in your home such as on top of your fridge or an oven that is turned off.
  • Heat the frying oil to around 350 F (177 C) for optimal frying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Isn’t My Dough Rising?

If you notice that your dough isn’t rising, it could be due to a few reasons such as age of the yeast, temperature of the milk and water, or temperature in your home. Make sure that the yeast you use is still active and that the temperature of the liquids aren’t so hot that they kill the yeast. Meanwhile, if you think that the dough didn’t rise due to your home temperature, you could place it in a turned off oven or on top of your fridge which may help it rise faster.

How to Serve Fried Flowers?

These fried flowers can be served as they are garnished with jam or dusted with powdered sugar. They are delicious served with cups of coffee or tea as well.

What Type of Oil Should Be Used for Frying?

The best type of oil to use for frying is a neutral-tasting oil such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or sunflower oil.

How to Store Fried Flowers

Fried flowers can be stored at room temperature in a sealed container for up to 1 to 2 days, although their texture will soften as they sit. You could also place them in a sealed freezer bag in the freezer for lengthier storage.

How to Make Fried Flowers

In a bowl, whisk the milk with the water, sugar, and yeast until combined. Add the flour and salt, and mix until a dough is formed. Mix in the oil. Cover the bowl and set it aside until doubled in size, about 2 hours.

Shape the dough into a log and cut it lengthwise. Cut it crosswise into smaller portions.

Roll each portion of dough into a circle and place them on squares of parchment paper. Place a small bottle in the middle of each portion of dough and cut slits to create 7 petals. Pinch the petals so they look more petal-like. Allow them to rise for 30 minutes.

Fry the flowers in a pot of hot oil until golden brown.

Remove them from the oil and garnish them with jam.

Serve and enjoy!
