It is a common belief that a healthy diet can help men avoid hair loss. There are many known causes of hair loss. Some include stress, underlying medical conditions and poor diet.

Now, a new study is claiming that including energy drinks in your diet is a surefire way to lose hair. The study was carried out by a group of Chinese scientists who believe that men who drink cans of fizzy drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, and sweetened tea and coffee are more liable to have hair loss.

The experts, who are from Tsinghua University in Beijing, proved their point by putting 1000 men up to a task that saw them consume between one to three liters of the drinks each week. Their research revealed that men who drank more than one sweetened drink every day have a 42%  chance of suffering hair loss compared to those who avoided high caffeine and sweetened drinks.

Men who already had hair loss also confessed that they drank between 1 to 12 sweetened drinks each week. In the journal, Nutrients, the habits of more than a thousand Chinese men between the ages of 18 and 45 were studied for more than four months.

While this lasted, their eating habits were logged from day to day and the background surrounding their mental health. The study also showed that those who consumed more fast food and lesser vegetables also experienced hair loss more quickly.

Furthermore, people who are prone to anxiety were reported to be at greater risk. According to dermatologist, Dr Sharon Wong: “Hair follicle cells are the second fastest dividing cells in the body and require all the nutrients of a well-balanced healthy diet.”

A healthy diet should ideally contain lean proteins, good carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals, however, unlike some people believe, there is no specific superfood for hair.

Wong also said: “As hair is not an essential structure for survival, the body does not prioritise the use of nutrients for hair growth. Nutritional deficiencies and crash diets are a common cause of hair thinning and shedding.”

Conclusion

A healthy diet is great if you’re trying to keep your hair around as you grow older. To avoid upending the process, it is best to steer clear of energy drinks as well as carbonated drinks.
