Getting enough good quality sleep is very crucial to your overall health. Symptoms of not getting enough sleep include irritability, compromised ability to focus, and fatigue among others. It is even thought to be connected to the slowing of your metabolism and even chronic diseases such as strokes, diabetes, and various cardiovascular issues.

Why Is Milk Good For Bedtime?

It is because it contains tryptophan and melatonin, your two best friends for a restful night. Milk (and other dairy products) are a really good source of tryptophan, which is an amino acid that can help promote sleep. It can come in particularly handy, especially if you’re used to tossing and turning before finally getting off to sleep. Our bodies do not naturally produce tryptophan, so it needs to be ingested in order to enjoy the benefits.

It’s also a precursor to melatonin, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘hormone of darkness.’ Its sleep-promoting abilities regulate our sleep-wake cycle. Tryptophan promotes the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin (the ‘feel good hormone’), and in turn, as the day draws to a close, can be converted into melatonin.

So yes, milk does help you enjoy a good night’s sleep, so keep some close when next you find yourself tossing and turning.
