Tips for the Best Mother's Day Cookies

Cream of tartar is a must for this recipe. It helps make the sugar cookies tender.

Use room-temperature ingredients for this recipe so you don't end up overworking the dough.

Add Mom's favorite flavors. Instead of regular vanilla sugar cookies, use other types of flavored cooking essences like peppermint, lemon, orange, almond, or strawberry. You can also make chocolate Mother's Day cookies by adding cocoa powder to the cookie dough.

Store-bought or homemade buttercream will work for this recipe. Add other flavorings to customize your cookies.

How to Store Mother's Day Cookies

Store your cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. They'll stay fresh in the fridge for up to one week. Mother's Day cookies can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.

How to Make Mother's Day Cookies

Preheat your oven to 350F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Set aside. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt in a large bowl.

Beat butter and sugar until creamy and light.

Beat in egg, almond, and vanilla extract.

Gradually beat in the flour mixture.

Mix until you get a smooth ball.

Roll out the dough between two sheets of baking paper to a thickness of about 5 mm.

Cut out cookies using the stencil of your choice.

Place them onto the baking tray, spacing the dough about 2 inches apart to allow the cookies to spread.

Bake for 9 to 11 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for 5 minutes. Place the cookies on a wire rack to cool completely.

Make vanilla buttercream and divide the icing evenly between separate bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl of icing, using the amount needed to get your desired shade. Stir well. Transfer each color of icing to a piping bag.

Decorate each cookie with your desired background color.

Once set, use a second color to make flower petals, or to create any design you'd like.

Serve and enjoy!
