How to Cook Chicken Breasts in the Slow Cooker
Choose the best parts of the chicken
It’s important to pick high quality chicken for the slow cooker. This recipe requires chicken breasts but you can use chicken thighs and legs as well.
Choose the right crockpot with the right dimensions
If your crockpot is too small and you have too much chicken, it will take a lot longer to cook. Find a crockpot that is the right size for what you’re making! For this recipe we recommend a 2.5 quart crock pot which is great for 3-6 chicken breasts.
Use butter or margarine
Butter is the secret weapon in this recipe! Using just a tablespoon in this recipe results in tender and juicy chicken. We recommend using butter, but if margarine is what you have on hand, use that!
Make sure to not overcook
This may seem like an obvious step, but it can be quite easy to overcook meat in a slow cooker. If you choose to use 3 chicken breasts versus 4, we recommend checking the chicken at the 2.5 hour mark.
How to Cook Frozen Chicken Breast in the Slow Cooker
Although you can place frozen chicken in the crockpot, the chicken will cook more evenly when thawed. To easily thaw the chicken, simply place the chicken in a freezer bag and cover them with cool water for about 20 minutes, flip, then let them sit for another 20 minutes.
In a small bowl, mix together all of the spices. Season the chick evenly on both sides with the spice mixture.
Add the chicken broth to the crockpot, followed by the butter.
Use a fork to break the butter into smaller pieces to disperse. Add the seasoned chicken to the crockpot. Try not to overlap the chicken.
Cover with a lid and cook on low for 3 hours. The internal temperature of the chicken should be 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and allow it to rest before slicing.
Be sure to use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken is cooked through. The internal temperature should be 165 degrees Fahrenheit. This recipe is versatile and can be made with other spices if desired. Toss in barbecue sauce -or any sauce- once done cooking for easy bbq chicken. Serve with any of your favorite vegetables, rice, pasta, and more. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in the microwave with a couple tablespoons of chicken broth and heat for 30 second intervals until heated through. The broth will help retain its moisture.
