Sleep problems seem to be affecting people more than ever, with an estimated 60 million American adults suffering from some kind of sleep disorder.

It’s not just a case of being unable to get to sleep; it’s often about not being able to stay asleep, too. If you’re just too familiar with lying awake for hours on end, why not give this homemade “sleep salve” a try?

It’s a simple salve to make, and requires you to blend up some essential oils and mix them into the salve. The bonus? This salve works wonders for sore, cracked heels too!

Sleepy Essential Oil Blend

40 drops cinnamon bark essential oil. This oil balances blood sugar levels, which helps the body to rest. 80 drops ginger essential oil. The warming quality of ginger serves as a sleep aid, as well as promoting feelings of relaxation. 80 drops peppermint essential oil. Peppermint oil helps to clear sinuses, and improve breathing. It’s also an anti-inflammatory. 80 drops lemon essential oil. Citrus oils are adaptogens, which means they help your body adapt to stress. 80 drops grapefruit essential oil. This oil helps to lower blood pressure, and balances estrogen levels.

Add all the oils to a small bowl or jar, and stir with a clean wooden stick or other non-metal utensil.

This recipe gives enough oil mixture to make four 4 ounce jars of sleep salve.

1 cup organic virgin coconut oil 1 cup organic extra virgin olive oil 4 tbsp. beeswax pastilles ½ tsp vitamin E oil (optional) Sleepy essential oil blend (from above)

Melt the coconut, olive oil, and beeswax in a double boiler, stirring often until melted – this takes around 10-15 minutes.

Get four 4 oz clean jars, and add 90 drops of the sleepy oil blend to each jar. When the beeswax mix is completely melted and mixed well, pour the mixture into the jars, and let cool.

Once the salve has set, cover each jar with an airtight lid. The sleep salve will last around eight months, but you’ll probably have used it up long before then!

How to Use

Once you’re in bed, apply the sleep salve to the bottom of both your feet, and rub it in. If your feet are very dry, you can put plenty of salve on, and cover your feet with clean cotton socks – this does wonders for dry, cracked feet.

Hopefully, you’ll soon drift off. Sweet dreams!
