Refrigerators are modern appliances we can hardly do without these days. They help us store our foods for longer and are present in most homes.

Sadly sometimes they can create a watery mess which is usually caused by clogged defrost drain. Keep reading to find out where to find the drainage hole, what causes it to get clogged up and how to take preventive measures.

Where is the drain hole located?

On most modern refrigerators the drain tube and hole are usually located inside the refrigerator at the bottom in the back.

To protect the hole, there may be a panel made from plastic that can be removed with a screwdriver. Once it is removed you'll be able to see the drain tube and drain hole.

Why does the drain tube get clogged and leak?

Should anything block the drain hole, it blocks the channel where water flows into the tube and this will cause water to leak to the bottom of the refrigerator, thereby causing a puddle.

A drain tube may be clogged if food particles fall into the drain hole. The drain tube and or drain hole can also get frozen. In such a case, running hot water through it can help to defrost it and allow the water to flow freely.

How to unclog the drain hole?

Get rid of anything that is blocking the drain hole or the drain tube. You can use hot water to clear the clogged drain line or use a turkey baster full of hot water directed into the drain hole.

If you don't have a turkey baster, compressed air works too

Keep running hot water through the drain hole until the sound of water dripping down into the drain pan is audible to you. The water that drips down into the drain pan should evaporate however if too much water spills, get rid of it with a towel.

Another thing you can use is hot water mixed with baking soda. Use 1 tablespoon of baking soda with about 2 or 3 cups of hot water. Remember to do this a few times a year to stop refrigerator water leaks on the floor.
