Sugar leads to emotional highs and lows. During the stressful moments, most of us crave for a sugar rush and indulge in desserts and sweets. This rush is followed by a subsequent sugar crash that can alter the emotional state. Consuming too much sugar can lead to a feeling of irritability, sadness, and worry, that can be even more troublesome if you are dealing with anxiety or depression. This happens because after consuming too much sugar, the body releases insulin to stabilize the blood glucose levels. This results in a more stressful situation and a roller coaster of energy levels, which can make you feel foggy, drained, irritable, jittery, and nervous.

It can worsen anxiety. The extreme highs and lows after consuming sugary stuff can worsen the state of anxiety and ability of our body to respond to stressful situations.

Increases the risk of depression. Consuming sugar during a stressful situation can turn it in to self-medication as it numbs the emotion and makes you feel hopeless, sad, and increase the fatigue. Increased consumption of sugar also triggers an imbalance of brain chemicals that can lead to depression and the risk of developing long term mental disorder.
