The Real Reasons Why We Never Drink Pig’s Milk

Pig milk isn't sold commercially due to the challenges of milking aggressive pigs, low yield, and economic inefficiency. While safe for human consumption and richer in taste, its distinct flavor and high fat content limit its appeal. Thus, pig milk remains largely unused in human diets.

Pigs, like all mammals, produce milk to nourish their young. However, despite the ubiquity of pigs in the agricultural sector, one would be hard-pressed to find pig milk on supermarket shelves or featured in dairy products. This absence is not due to oversight but is the result of several practical and biological factors that make pig milk unsuitable for commercial dairy production.

Practical Challenges of Milking Pigs

One of the primary reasons pig milk is not commercially available is the difficulty associated with milking pigs. Pigs are not as docile as cows; they are more aggressive and less tolerant of the repetitive, close contact involved in milking. Physically, pigs have smaller teats and lie down to nurse, which complicates the milking process. Unlike cows, which have been selectively bred for centuries to optimize milk production and milking efficiency, pigs have not undergone similar selective pressures for milking purposes.

Economic Viability and Yield

Economically, milking pigs does not make sense. Pigs produce significantly less milk compared to cows, and their milk yield is not sufficient to sustain a profitable commercial dairy operation. While a cow can produce 30 to 40 liters of milk per day, a sow (female pig) typically produces only about 3 to 5 liters. This lower yield, combined with the difficulties in milking, makes pig milk production highly inefficient and economically unviable on a large scale.

Can Pig Milk Poison You or Make You Crazy?

Regarding health concerns, there are myths about pig milk being poisonous or causing insanity in humans. These notions are unfounded; pig milk is not toxic nor does it induce any psychological alterations. Like milk from cows, goats, and sheep, pig milk is perfectly safe for human consumption. However, its composition differs from more commonly consumed milks. Pig milk is richer in fat and more calorically dense, which could make it less appealing from a dietary standpoint for general public consumption.

What Does Pig Milk Taste Like?

As for the taste, pig milk is reported to be richer and creamier than cow's milk, with a more robust flavor. This distinct taste profile could potentially limit its appeal to a broader audience who might prefer the milder flavors of traditional dairy milks.
