
For years, Belgium has built a significant part of its economic and cultural identity around potatoes: not only as a national gastronomic symbol, but as a true industrial pillar, thanks to the production of frozen fries and a strong export vocation. Today, however, this model faces an unexpected challenge: production has exceeded demand, and potatoes are far more abundant than the market can absorb. But what has pushed a pillar of the Belgian economy into this impasse? Behind the surplus paradox lies a combination of very specific factors.
How Did We Get to This Surplus?
The current situation did not arise suddenly, but is the result of a series of dynamics that have accumulated over time. In recent years, the Belgian potato sector has experienced a period of strong expansion, driven by growing international demand: many producers have therefore increased their cultivated areas, convinced that the market would continue to support those volumes. The problem is that demand does not grow naturally and directly proportional to agricultural performance: harvests have been particularly abundant, but consumption has not followed the same pace, and this has led to a progressive accumulation of product. Potatoes have ended up in warehouses, often in quantities much higher than expected, creating increasing pressure on the entire supply chain.

The Problem of Conservation
Then there's a factor within the supply chain that weighs heavily: storage costs. Potatoes can't simply be piled up in a corner and forgotten: to prevent them from sprouting, rotting, or losing their frying qualities, they must be stored in enormous refrigerated hangars with constant ventilation. Considering the soaring costs of energy, fertilizer, and refrigeration systems experienced by European agriculture in recent years, keeping millions of tons of surplus cool costs exorbitant amounts.
For many farmers, therefore, the paradox has become unsustainable: it costs less to destroy the crop or donate it to biogas plants than to pay the electricity bill to store a product the market doesn't want. Many fields have been plowed again, destroying the potatoes directly in the soil to prevent the proliferation of pests in the overflowing warehouses.

When Excess Becomes an Economic Problem
The Belgian case clearly illustrates a typical agricultural market dynamic: producing more does not necessarily mean earning more. When supply exceeds demand, prices tend to fall and, in some cases, can reach levels that don't even cover production and storage costs. This puts pressure not only on individual farmers but on the entire industrial system, which, in this case, also revolves around the processing of potatoes into finished products. The sector is thus forced to rethink its strategies, while potential solutions are being discussed, ranging from reducing cultivated areas to finding new outlets for surpluses, such as use for animal feed or energy production.
