Potatoes are the most commonly used root vegetable and are a staple to practically every household on this planet. Here are 7 tips to help you choose the best potato every time.

Squeeze them

Slightly squeeze the potatoes to check its firmness. A soft and squishy potato indicates that it is not good for consumption.

Cut marks

Blemishes and cuts on potatoes can harbor microorganisms, which decays it quite fast. You must inspect the potatoes well from all sides for any dent, cut, or gouges.

Smell them

The potatoes should ideally smell faintly of soil as these are grown underground.

It is quite common to find potatoes with sprouts and growing eyes. You may consider buying potatoes with sprouts only if you are purchasing them for immediate consumption but make sure to remove the growing eye before using them.

Wrinkled potatoes lack moisture as they may have been stored in warm temperature or bruised because of mishandling them. You must pick potatoes that are plump and smooth.

Green skin

Do not buy potatoes with green skin as it may taste bitter and unappealing because of the production of the chemical solanine in them, which can lead to diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, and hallucination if eaten in large quantities.

Dark spot

Presence of dark spots on the surface of potatoes is a sign of rough handling, blight or fungal infection. So, do not buy potatoes with dark spots, black areas, and bruises.
