Here is an insight in to the way in which brown rice syrup affects our health.

Added sugar is certainly bad news for our health. With the presence of many sweetening alternatives, people can enjoy a healthier meal without compromising on its taste. Brown rice syrup or rice malt syrup or simply rice syrup is one of these low fructose sweeteners that is essentially all glucose. Read on to know if the brown rice syrup is good for our health or not.

Brown rice syrup is produced by exposing cooked brown rice to certain enzymes that break down starches in to smaller sugars. It is a thick and sugary syrup that contains 3 types of sugars, maltotriose (52%), maltose (45%), and glucose (3%), which is essentially all glucose in nature. It may also contain a tiny amount of calcium and potassium. It should be also noted that brown rice syrup contains no amount of fructose and is slightly healthier than regular sugar.

Brown rice syrup is high in the glycemic index. It has a glycemic index of 98, which is higher than most of the sweeteners available in the market. According to a study, a significant amount of the harmful chemical arsenic was found to be present in the organic brown rice syrup, which is a potential cause of concern.
