If you thought there was only one type of banana in the world, then think again!

There are actually over 1,000 different types of bananas around the globe, and red bananas are a subgroup of bananas from Southeast Asia with red skin.

They are soft and have a sweet taste when they are ripe – some people say that they taste like ordinary bananas, but with a hint of raspberries.

1. Full of Nutrients

Red bananas are very rich in potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and contain a decent amount of fiber.

A small red banana contains around 90 calories, and is made up mostly of water and carbs.

2. Could Help Lower Blood Pressure

Potassium is an essential mineral for heart health because of its ability to regulate blood pressure, and red bananas are full of potassium.

Research shows that consuming potassium-rich foods may help reduce blood pressure. A review of 22 studies found that increased potassium intake lowered systolic (top number in a reading) blood pressure by 7 mm Hg. This was strongest in people who had high blood pressure at the beginning of the study.

Red bananas also contain magnesium, another mineral that helps control blood pressure. Increasing your intake of potassium and magnesium may be more effective at controlling blood pressure than consuming either mineral alone.
