Whenever you go to the supermarket, you always check the expiration date of the food. However, few people know that some foods do not (almost) expire ever: let’s find out which they are.

Every time you go to the supermarket, you always check the expiry date of a product before buying it, even if in some cases it is only an approximate day, beyond which you can still consume that food without putting your health at risk. Although we have always been used to thinking that all foods deteriorate over time, the truth is that some of them can be preserved for a long time without losing their hygienic and organoleptic characteristics. Let's find out which are the 10 foods that do not (almost) expire ever.

1. Instant coffee

Those who use soluble coffee infrequently should know that it can be preserved for a long time. The secret is to divide it into small portions to be put in the freezer and thawed if necessary.

2. Salt

To be preserved for a long time, the salt must be mixed with rice. Salt is highly hygroscopic and it is therefore necessary to place it in a cool and dry place so as not to alter it.

3. Liquors and spirits

Alcohol is a distillate and consequently it does not allow the development of bacteria. Liqueurs and spirits can be preserved for a long time in closed, fresh and dark places.

4. Wine vinegar

Wine vinegar does not expire and, also over time, does not change its taste. Like almost all other foods, it must be preserved in a cool and dark place.

5. Sugar

Sugar is one of those products that never expire because bacteria cannot reproduce within it. It is no coincidence that sugar is used as a preservative for jams or canned fruit. The only drawback is its hardening.

6. Corn starch and potato starch

Corn starch and potato starch should be preserved tightly closed in a cool, dry place for indefinite shelf life. Otherwise, they tend to absorb moisture and odors from nearby substances.

7. Honey

Over time, honey can change color or crystallization but this does not mean that it cannot be consumed anymore. To make honey more liquid, just put the jar open in a bain-marie. This rule applies only if you have kept the honey jar closed in a cool place.

8. Maple syrup

The maple syrup can be preserved in the freezer to last longer. If you do not use it often, you can divide it into small portions and put them in the freezer.

9. Legumes

Legumes are among those foods that last for a long time. They can be dry or canned, the important thing is to keep them in a dry and cool place.

10. Rice, oats and spelt

These three products can be preserved for years if they are placed in a cool and dry place, protected from insects and dust. Of course, this rule only applies if these foods are hermetically sealed. An exception is brown rice, which can go rancid because it is rich in fat.
