Use cream and your favorite melting cheeses such as cheddar or Emmental to make a flavorful sauce you can serve in several different ways. It's so versatile you can pair it with pasta, nachos or vegetables. You can make cheese sauce in a few minutes.

What is the best Cheese for the Sauce?

The secret of this tasty sauce lies in the cheese choice. You can pick your favorite melting cheese or choose it according to your side. Gruyere, Brie, Emmental and Cheddar are the best options, otherwise, use mozzarella, Monterey Jack, Swiss cheese or Velveeta. If you love strong flavors, you can try goat cheese or blue cheese.

If you pick Brie cheese, it's best to use it whole and without the rind to avoid lumps.

How to make Cheese Sauce

Making the cheese sauce easier than you may think. Start by cutting the cheese into cubes, then pour the cream in a saucepan over medium heat. When the cream boils, add the cheese mix, salt and pepper. Low the heat and go on stirring until melted. You can also add a little bit of Brandy before seasoning.

How to thicken Cheese Sauce

If your cheese sauce turns out too thin, you can add more cheese to thicken it. By adding an extra dose, the cheese sauce will be thick, creamy and even more savory.

Otherwise, you can add a little bit of cornstarch and water while the sauce is still hot, but be careful with the amount because the sauce may heat up too much making the cheese separate.

Tips

– You can replace cream by using 200 ml of milk and a teaspoon of cornstarch. Add a final step to this recipe by placing the cornstarch in a small bowl with a tablespoon of cold milk. Mix to dissolve and pour it into the saucepan when the cheeses have melted. Stir for a couple of minutes until thick.

Grate cheese by yourself. The store-bought shredded cheese contains additives that do not allow it to melt evenly.

– If you want to give this cheese sauce a new twist, you can include aromatic herbs such as oregano or basil, and spices such as nutmeg or pepper.

– For a microwave cheese sauce, heat 2 tbsp of butter in a microwave-safe bowl for 45 seconds or until melted. Add 2 tbsp of flour and a cup of warm milk, and mix. Next, add in a cup of shredded cheese and let it cook in the microwave for up to 2 minutes or until thick, stirring occasionally. Finally, season to taste.

How to serve Cheese Sauce

This cheese sauce is best served hot as it is creamy and enhance all the flavors. When it cools it becomes more dense and compact, which makes it a wonderful spreading sauce on sandwiches or snacks.

Cheese sauce goes great with mac and cheese, nachos, baked potatoes, fries, broccoli or cauliflower. You can also add it to meat, fish and your favorite vegetables.
